Kayaking And Paddleboarding Recreational Areas

The Mill Creek Day Use Area offers two miles of beach, with an impressive cove that’s perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding. There is a vehicle fee to utilize this recreation area. Sand Dollar Beach might be the most scenic beach on the Big Sur coast, and it’s also the longest. This beach is popular for recreational activities such as fishing, surfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. There is a small entrance fee, but it is well worth it.

East Observatory Trail – This trail leads to the Griffith Observatory, which is a Los Angeles landmark. The trail has a 380 foot elevation and stretches over 1.5 miles. It will take you around 45 minutes to reach the Observatory. The trail is open to hikers with dogs.

Oak Creek Canyon Trail – This trail is special because it is designed for both the sighted and the blind. It comes with a guide fence and stretches over .8 miles. It will probably take you around 15 minutes to reach its summit. This trail is open to hikers, bikes, and dogs.

Chamlee Wilderness Park – This trail overlooks the stunning Malibu coast and you are likely to see dozens of wildflowers on your way up. The distance to the top is 3.6 miles and it will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the summit. There is a park entrance fee and dogs are welcome.

Camping

Mountain Biking

If you love mountain biking, prepare for an experience of a lifetime on the Santa Monica Mountains. There are diverse bike trails that transverse the mountain from the canyon floors to the ridgetops. First, A Little History About Big Bear

The Serrano Indians lived on the land for thousands of years, along with grizzly bears (which is how the area got its name). However, in the midst of the Gold Rush, when explorers and their parties arrived, the bears disappeared (not surprising) and in 1933, black bears were introduced to the area. The Indians never killed the grizzly bears, nor wore their fur, since they thought of them of ancestors.

You can still see them in the area, but instead of seeing them in their natural habitat, they’re at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. Common, smaller animals like squirrels, coyotes, and raccoons are seen often in the area, but larger ones like the black bears, mountain lions, and deer are rare sights.

A local man, Kirk Phillips, visited New York City and saw how their bus line worked (the world’s first) and decided to create one that ran from San Bernardino to Big Bear Valley. This, in turn, allowed for further and faster development of the whole Big Bear area.

The first resort built was the Pan Hot Springs Hotel in 1921, named after the land it was erected on which contained a natural hot spring. After that, more resorts were built, some high class enough to attract celebrities of that era. By 1924, there were 44 resorts, but there were fires that damaged many of them in 1933.

What Water Activities Can I Do In Big Bear?

Located at the center of the city, Big Bear Lake is the highest-earning attraction at the resort, most frequented during the summer months. On those weekends, there is usually a wide range of water vessels on the lake, like canoes, jet skis, kayaks, speed boats, fishing boats, and more. The Ancheer’s four-chambered PVC hull is as good as any dependable boat should be. The 0.9 mm material on the triple layered hull is not only tough, but is also UV, puncture, stain and oil resistant. There are a good number of two and three-chambered rafts but the Ancheer inflatable dinghy has four chambers that accommodate a pressure of 3.6 PSI.

Measuring 7.55′ x 4.13″, the Ancheer Inflatable Boat shores up enough space to support 2 people, but the 10.8′ model can hold 4-5 adults or a weight of up to 880 pounds. However, for a smooth ride in this sized model, it is recommended that you restrict the number to three grown ups.
